A high school senior finds herself immersed in an online game of truth or dare, where her every move starts to become manipulated by an anonymous community of “watchers.”

Vee is a regular high-school student; she’s quiet, geeky, introverted and shy. She has a tense relationship with her mother, and both of them are dealing with the recent death of her brother.

Sydney, Vee’s friend, becomes popular in an online game called Nerve, where you sign up and are given tasks by viewers. Once you complete a task, you get money deposited in your bank account and two most popular players face off in the final level. Vee has her reservations about the game, to begin with.

But a humiliating incident, where she gets shot down by the popular boy in school, forces her to break out of her shell and sign up for the game too.

As her first task, she kisses a total stranger – Ian – who is reading her favourite book in a diner. The two share great chemistry and the viewers of the game keep giving them dares together. With each dare, the stakes rise and Vee loses herself to the thrill, sometimes stealing dresses from an expensive shop, sometimes walking on ladders placed between two buildings and even participating in a high-speed blind-folded motorcycle race.
She eventually realizes how dangerous the game is, and alerts the authorities, angering the makers of the game. This is when Ian reveals to her that he is a finalist from the previous year and had committed the same mistake of going to the police upon the death of one of his friends. The game thus took over his life and made him an online prisoner by hacking into his family’s accounts and destroying their lives.
Together, Ian and Vee decide to beat the game, but they must rely on the goodness and moral values of the viewers, who are so addicted to the dangerous game. In the end, good intention beats temporary thrill and Vee is successful in shutting the game down.

There they find a jungle adventure game called Jumanji, which seems to have been abandoned. They take Jumanji home and find a warning message; “Do not begin unless you intend to finish”. They start playing, only to discover that the game is real; any dangers encountered in the game spring to live somewhere in the house. When Peter rolls on a lion, a real lion appears, which Judy and Peter trap in their mother’s bedroom. Judy rolls on a stampede, Peter rolls on a monsoon, and Judy rolls on an explorer – each appears in real life to wreak havoc in the house. Still, they continue to play, hoping that by finishing the game everything will go back to normal. The game finally ends when Judy rolls a volcano and yells “JUMANJI!” In an instant, everything is back to normal, and the siblings quickly return the game to the park before their parents finally return. The story ends when Judy and Peter look outside and see their neighbours, Danny and Walter, excitedly returning from the park with Jumanji in their hands and their mother claims they never bother to finish the games they play, nor read the instructions.
